iPhone on 3 GSM in Hong Kong!

It's real, it's done. iPhone running on 3 GSM in Hong Kong. No turbosim or other hardware fix...just a software unlock solution.

My cousin just bought and sent me an 8gb iPhone (post $200 usd price cut of course, thank you your Steve-ness). Package arrived, and I spent some time following the most awesome tutorial built around iUnlock, a freeware developed by the "Dev Team".

It was relatively painless and I can only say this little machine that could, CAN.

Some drawbacks:

-Youtube doesn't work.
-I have an issue accessing the sync'd contacts on the iPhone
-exploring ways to get data running on my 3 2G network

Everything else is great.

If you've got it running or are interested in making it happen, I'd love to hear from you here!

How big is the iPhone demand in Hong Kong? Ipods are everywhere, so if an iPhone can be used here then I'm sure it's going to be big too.

Jon:

Huge demand. Just talk to anyone in Central. The Apple strategy of regional rollout has created huge pent-up demand.

Where do you live and is this the same where you are (assuming you're not in the US)?

Would be interesting to see how next few months play out.

Nice to see!

Interesting to note though that your software fix seems to have inverted the display - reading backwards a new skill you need to possess to hack the iphone??!

:-P

Just jerkin yer chain....beware the iphone updates that seem to lock you back out again...and watch for my pilfering hands next time we meet!!!

the image inversion is just photobooth and yes I will watch for your sticky hands!

thanks pseudo

actually i'm having trouble also with making the contacts appear. during the sync process the contacts are all downloaded to the phone but i can't access it yet from the phone itself.

good luck with your unlock!

I got my iPhone and unlocked it with the free software available from Hackint0sh. Had no problem with getting youtube to work (just followed instructions I found from somewhere...) and also got rid of the US number format. Now only thing that is not working 100% is caller display as all # in my address books are in international format (with the +) and iPhone doesn't seem to be able to recognise incoming call without +852. Not a biggie, otherwise everything is perfect!

i bought a couple in wanchai computer centre from data concepts (great service from Ken!) - no problems, don't understand the problems you state with youtube, all works fine - using smartoneVodaphone gprs when wifi unavailable - all good!

Pseudo,

How were you able to change the number format? The US format is bugging the crap out of me.
